Regulations and standards regarding ecodesign

Regulations and standards regarding ecodesign

Find a set of regulatory texts to help your teams in charge of the development/purchase of electrical and electronic appliances.

Regulatory texts

  • ErP Directives (Energy related Products) - European directive regarding the ecodesign of energy related products
  • Framework directive on waste and amendments - European directive which defines the notion of waste and the obligation to treat waste in a way that does not have a negative impact on human health and the environment, establishes the hierarchy regarding waste management, and sets the rules and objectives for the Member States…
  • WEEE Directive - European directive on the management of waste electrical and electronic appliances
  • REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) - European regulation concerning the registration, assessment and authorisation of chemical substances, as well as their applicable restrictions RoHS Directive and amendments - European directive which aims to limit the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic appliances
  • POP Regulation and amendments - European regulation on substances recognised as persistent organic pollutants

Standards

European standardisations work to develop various standards related to “material efficiency” aspects (such as sustainability, ability to remanufacture or repair a product, reusability and upgrade, recyclability and recoverability, recycled material content) for energy related products.

Learn more about the development of the two standards ecosystem has been particularly involved in:

  • EN45555 (General methods for assessing the recyclability and recovery of energy related products) - finalised version (publication at the beginning of 2020)
  • EN45557 (General method for assessing the recycled material content of energy related products) - the version is being finalised (likely to be published at the beginning of 2020)

  • Environmental assessment of products

Various standards applying to electrical and electronic products and defining calculation rules for an environmental assessment of the life cycle:

  • EN15804 (Sustainability of construction works - Environmental product declarations - Core rules for the product categories of construction products)
  • EN50693 (Method for quantitative ecodesign via life cycle assessment and environmental declarations through relating product category rules for EEE) - Publication at the beginning of 2020
